Carters Beach Location

Carters Beach is a great little coastal spot, consisting of a small community of residents, a café, playground, The Domain, the golf course, the airport, the Buller River Tip-Head and of course the beach! Surrounding the beach is rural farmland. The area has a distinctly different atmosphere from that of Westport, provided by the area's distance and geography.

The Historic Denniston Incline

Denniston (named after R.B. Denniston, the company's surveyor and colliery manager) was the jewel in the Westport Coal Company's crown. It was also the country's most productive coalfield. The incline plunged precipitously, 548m in a distance of just 1670m, with some grades as steep as 1 in 1.25 (80%).

Cape Foulwind Walkway

A seal colony, a lighthouse and panoramic views of mountains and the coastline feature on this spectacular coastal walkway. From the car park at Tauranga Bay, a very well formed 10-minute walking track leads to viewing platforms over the seal colony below. Interpretive panels at the platforms provide information on the activity in the colony and the seals' breeding cycle, as well as historical information about the sealing industry that once existed in New Zealand.
